It’s winter and as tempting as it is to hibernate, there are actually events worth the battle with a toddler to put their snowsuit on and do the gloves on and off dance.

Winterlude kicks off on February 2 and along with the events downtown there is an event at Shenkman Arts Centre that is not to be missed.

Fête Frissons, takes place on February 3 at 8:30 a.m. until noon. It’s a winter celebration for the whole family to enjoy, and the best part? It’s free!

What’s going on? Here’s the list:

  • Make your own percussion instrument with artist Sonia Arenas. Use it to MAKE SOME NOISE when Japanese drumming sensation, Oto-Wa-Taiko takes the stage.
  • Be dazzled by the Ottawa Circus School’s Fire Weaver Show.
  • Meet the puppets and get a sneak preview of Charly in the Desert with Creation in Vivo.
  • Celebrate the launch of the Shenkman Arts Centre Mini Book Library with a reading by Jay Odjick, Kagagi superhero creator and illustrator of Robert Munch’s book Blackflies. This is a book about kids battling bugs and using stinky bug spray. It’s a good time! Just one of many authors reading that day.
  • Curl up in our cozy east-end corner and hear readings by Ottawa School of Theatre students.
  • Beechwood Books will be on site selling books– buy your own or contribute to our library collection!
  • Warm yourself in winter by painting a heart using watercolours on canvas with the Ottawa School of Art. The final community project will be exhibited in the 3rd floor gallery.
  • The new Musical Instrument Lending Library with the Ottawa Public Library will be on site to take about this amazing new initiative.
  • Everyone loves Face painting with LynneART Face & Body Art. Prepare to be painted! Then choose a costume from the Ottawa School of Theatre’s tickle trunk and get your photo taken at their photo booth.
  • Take part in Tai Chi demonstrations with Tai Chi Master, Zhang Hongxu.
  • Play OUTSIDE with staff and volunteers from the Bob McQuarrie Recreation Complex and the Ruddy Family YMCA-YWCA, our outdoor play enthusiasts!
  • The Cumberland Heritage Village Museum will bring activities to explore our past and imagine our future.

All of this plus more and a pancake breakfast from Cora’s Breakfast and Lunch ($5). How can you say no?
